COUMIAC'S
QUARRY
|
|
![]() |
![]() Coumiac marble has been used extensively since the VIth century in the decoration of tombstones and mauseleums. In the middle ages it could be found strengthening many fortified strongholds throughout France. A marble-mason from the Jura region of France, Nicolas Gauthier, opened the quarry commercially in 1890. It remained a working quarry up until 1965. Extracted rock or “Marbre Grotte” is one of the most ornate and eagerly sought after marble in the world and can today be found decorating the facade of the White House in Washington and the famous Maison de France in Rio de Janeiro. |

![]() After excavation had finished and the quarry closed, the olive trees were left wild and plants and bushes reconquerred the dry brittle terrain, colonising in part the mountains of residue left by the marble mineworks. A rich mediterranean flora now flourishes on the sides of the quarry footpath, particularly dominant on the northern side of the site with Judas trees, Kermes Oak, Genista and Mastic trees creating a magnificent natural picture so common in the south of France. |
